This day teachers and pupils
were sightseeing the second biggest city in Portugal- Porto. It is located
along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal. Porto is one of the oldest
European centres, and its historical core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site
by UNESCO in 1996.
Among the architectural
highlights of the city, Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto) is the oldest surviving
structure, together with the small romanesque Church of Cedofeita, the gothic
Igreja de São Francisco (Church of Saint Francis), the remnants of the city
walls, the São Bento Train Station inaugurated in
1916, the historical station
is known for its tile (azulejo) panels that depict scenes of the History of
Portugal. It is located in the Almeida Garret Square, in the centre of the city.
It remains in regular use as a railway station, and the gardens of the Crystal
Palace (Palácio de Cristal).
We could admire lots of
bridges which span the Douro River between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de
Gaia. It was a really breath-taking impression.
After sightseeing we had lunch
near the Douro river.
In the afternoon we had free time for shopping, more sightseeing and
relaxing.
SEE YOU IN LAS PALMAS!
